The CGST Act, 2017 requires certain taxpayers to file annual returns. The annual return contains details regarding purchases and sales made during the year along with other information about CGST, SGST and IGST. There are different types of annual returns as per Rule 80 of CGST Rules 2017
, namely; GSTR-9, GSTR-9A, GSTR-9B and GSTR-9C. In this article, we shall talk more about GSTR-9B.
What Is GSTR-9B And Who Is It Applicable To?
GSTR-9B is an annual return to be filed by every E-commerce operator who is required to collect tax at source under section 52 (5) of the CGST Act, 2017
. It contains the details of outward supplies of goods and services, returns if any, and the amount collected during the financial year. It summarises the details filed in GSTR-8
, which is the monthly return to be filed by E-Commerce operators.
What Is The Due Date For Filing GSTR-9B?
GSTR-9B must be filed by the 31 of December following the end of a financial year. E.g., the due date for filing GSTR-9B for the financial year 2019-20 is 31 December 2020. If the taxpayer fails to file the GSTR-9B before the due date, then a late fee of INR 100 per day will be charged for each day of failure to file the return, subject to a maximum amount calculated at 0.25% of the turnover in the State or Union Territory.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Central Government has provided some relaxations. The deadline for filing Annual Returns for FY 2018-19 was initially extended
to 30 June 2020. This was further extended
to 30 September 2020 and now stands extended
to 31 October 2020.
The GSTR-9B format is yet to be released by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBIC).
