ESIC Portal History and Background

The Employees State Insurance Act, 1948 (ESI Act), was the first major legislation on social Security for workers post-independence of India. The ESI Scheme is administered by a statutory corporate body called the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), which has members representing Employers, Employees, the Central Government, the State Government, the Medical Profession, and the Hon’ble Members of Parliament.

The ESIC Act 1948 incorporates various health related eventualities that the workers are generally exposed to, such as sickness, maternity, temporary or permanent disablement, and death due to employment injury, resulting in loss of wages or earning capacity etc under the Eway bill. ESIC Applicability And ESIC Portal

As per Section 2(12), of the ESI Act, the Act shall apply to all non-seasonal factories employing ten or more persons, you can also ESIC search by name. Under Section 1(5) of the Act, The Central Government of India has extended the coverage to the following under GST search.

  • Shops and Hotels/Restaurants.
  • Road Motor Transport organizations.
  • Cinema halls including theatres or preview theatres.
  • Newspaper publication houses.
  • An establishment engaged in Insurance Business, Non-Banking Financial Companies.
  • Port Trust, Airport Authorities, or Port Code List.
  • Warehousing establishments.

Employing 20 or more Persons, where Central Government is the appropriate Government in GST number search. The existing wage limit for coverage under the Act effective from 01.01.2017 is Rs.21,000/- per month (Rs.25,000/- per month, in the case of Persons with Disability) calculated with the GST calculator.

Benefits of ESIC Registration

  • Sickness Benefits: If an insured person requires medical treatment and needs leave from work on medical grounds, the benefit is paid for the period of abstention for a period not exceeding 91 days in two consecutive benefit periods at the rate of 70% of the standard benefit rate.
  • Medical Benefits: All persons registered under the ESIC scheme can avail of medical care for themselves and their family members from the day they enter insurable employment. Further, there is no ceiling expenditure for the treatment of the Insured Person or his family ESIC member login in the GST return.
  • Maternity Benefits: All women registered under the ESIC scheme can avail of benefits in paid leaves of three (3) months.
  • Deceased Employee: In case of death while underemployment, 90% of the insured person's salary will be given to family members of a deceased employee.
  • Funeral Expenses: In case of the death of any employee, an amount of Rs. 10,000 is payable to the person's dependents who perform last rites from day one of entering insurable employment.
  • Retirement Benefits: After retirement or in old age, medical care and benefits are provided.
  • Benefits For Permanent Disablement: In permanent disablement, 90% of his salary shall be provided as a monthly payment.
  • Unemployment Benefits: An insured for three years or more is provided unemployment benefits if they become unemployed due to the closure of a factory/establishment, retrenchment, or permanent invalidity.

What Are Services Offered by Esic Portal?

The employer's  ESIC login portal offers a variety of services that are broadly divided into two categories, namely Employer Services and Employee Services ESIC portal application login.

  • Employer Services: Services provided under this section include the following for employers:
  • Employer Portfolio: By using the employer website the employer can update employee details in a timely manner, keep a salary report, respond to verification of absenteeism, etc.
  • Shram Suvidha Website: This portal allows an organization to meet all the labour laws that apply to it. Compliance can be reported in one form which makes it easier for those who complete such forms. There are important indicators of performance monitoring, thus making testing more of a natural purpose.
  • Employee Services: The services provided under this section include the following for employees:
  • ESIC IP Portal login: The Insured Person can access the IP portal http://www.esic.in/employeeportal/login.aspx with his / her insurance number (such as Username) and verify the details of the contribution paid in his or her name, assess the right to various benefits, etc.
  • Medical Benefit Rate: The Medical Benefits Scale brings insured individuals and their family members to a set of guidelines in which they can receive medical benefits.

Contribution to ESIC

ESIC Scheme is contributory in nature, and therefore all the employees of the factories or establishments to which the Act applies shall make applicable contributions as provided in the Act in HSN Code List. The contribution payable shall comprise of Employer’s contribution and the employee’s contribution at the specified rate. These rates are revised from time to time. Currently, the employee’s contribution rate is 0.75 % of the wages and the Employer's contribution is 3.25% of the wages paid/ payable (w.e.f. 1st July 2019).

  • Employees with a salary up to Rs.176/- per day (w.e.f. 01.09.2019) shall not be required to make any contribution. At the same time, employers shall continue to contribute their share in respect of these employees.
  • The employer shall be liable to deduct employee contributions from wages and make his contribution at the rates specified within 15 days of the last day of the Calendar month in which the contributions fall due.

The contribution period shall be as follows:

  • 1st April to 30th September 1st January of the following year to 30th June.
  • 1st October to 31st March 1st July to 31st December of the year following.

Penal Provisions for non-payment/delayed payments

The Corporation may levy and recover damages under Reg. 31C at the following rates,

Registration Process

It is mandatory for an employer to get registered within 15 days online www.esic.in who becomes coverable under the ESI Act 1948. After successfully registering on the ESIC Portal the employer will get a 17-digit code through the ESIC portal login. An employer need not generate a separate code for different branches located in India but has to generate sub-codes.

Note: Sub-codes are for those branches that do not fall under the jurisdiction of the regional or sub-regional office of the main office.

ESIC Registration Login Procedure for Employer

The Factory/Establishment to which the Act applies can be registered through ESIC login employee for ESIC login employer on www.esic.in login within 15 days from the date of the Act’s applicability. The Employer who meets the criteria of registration shall provide details like factory or establishment name, Address of the Employer, Employer’s name, Bank Account details, PAN, and e-mail address for ESIC employer login. The Employer would be then provided with a user ID and a password through which he can avail ESIC portal login facility. Note that the employer shall use Form-1, available on the ESIC portal, for filling in the above details.   • After furnishing all the correct details you will be successfully registered under ESIC gateway login.

  • The ESIC employee login on to the ESIC employee portal login or the insured person can log into the esic.in/employeeportal/login.aspx using their insurance number as user ID, once you are done with the registration. After they log into the ESIC portal they can determine the total contribution paid by him and their employer along with other benefits entitled under ESI login etc.

 ESIC Applicability

The ESIC is applicable to all those establishments and factories that fall under ESI Act having ten or more employees. Currently, the wage limit for ESIC applicability is 21,000 INR. Under the ESI scheme, the insured person or his family member gets both cash and non-cash benefits. Some of the common examples of cash benefits are Sickness, Disablement, Maternity, and Funeral expenses.
